WPC Assistant Superintendent Requirements 

Below is a job description for Assistant Superintendent as it relates to the construction industry. As far as what is expected at WPC and how things shall be done on specifically on plant work we must break them down into three very important categories.

Conduct and Character

The Assistant Superintendent is an ambassador for this company.  On a day to day basis he has more one on one contact with the client, the consultant, the subcontractor, the vendor and the workforce.  It is essential that he consistently exhibits a high degree of emotional intelligence. The Assistant Superintendent has to adapt to and be tolerant of the working styles of others, both within and outside the organization and has to work with and cooperate with the superintendent.  His responsibility is to provide support for the Senior Superintendent.

In other words, a professional demeanor and a good attitude are necessary for this position and paramount to managing the day to day conflict that arises in this environment. 

Contractual and Technical Understanding

Unlike conventional construction job descriptions our Assistant Superintendents must have a fundamental understanding of contracts and plant construction, specifically as it relates to critical path method, scheduling and expediting and a thorough knowledge of all aspects of plant construction (technology, equipment, methods); subcontract agreements, purchase orders, negotiations, cost control, scheduling and safety.

Although every plant is different there are common elements without fail that have to be anticipated and managed on every job.  Historically 95 percent of our jobs come down to this.

Most of our previous projects are controlled by the sequence of deliveries and the management of subcontractors. Every job requires basically the same scheduling techniques and logistical management. The most important items on plant work are yard piping, process equipment and the associated structural tankage. These items are all controlled by the durations of purchasing, shop drawing review/approval, delivery and coordination. It is the Assistant Superintendent job to cooperate and supplement the Super’s responsibility to understand this core process and assist Project Manager to ensure that this coordination effort fulfills our contractual duties.  This position requires 7 years experience with growth opportunities available.

Administrative Responsibilities

The company expects the flow of information from the field to be timely, accurate, consistent and seamless, whether it is with regard to Human Resources, pay requests, time cards, RFI’s, budgetary, invoice approval, change order and extra work documentation.  Assistant Supers must have excellent communication, organizational and supervisory skills to execute this essential function. It is essential because with this information we monitor and measure success on individual projects which in turn relates to overall company performance once all projects are combined.  The Assistant Superintendent will assist and cooperate with the Senior Superintendent.

Provide overall on-site administrative and technical management on a construction project site.
